Composition of National Commission for Women / Number of members in National Commission for Women

 The National Commission for Women consists of 6 members,

1 president

5 Members (compulsory for any member to belong to Scheduled Castes and Tribes)

The National Commission for Women has a secretary


        The nomination of Chairman, Member and Secretary is done by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

        The salary, allowances, pension and service conditions are determined by the central government.


Tenure of President and Members of National Commission for Women

The term of the Chairman and the members is 3 years.

Provision for the removal of (removal from office) the President and members of the National Commission for Women


The Central Government may remove the President or any of its members from its office,


If that person: -

1. has been declared insolvent

2. Mentally declared unwell by the competent court

3 unable to work

4. Has been corrupted for any crime or is immoral in the eyes of the Central Government

5. Has been absent in three consecutive meetings of the Commission.


Functions and Powers of National Commission for Women


A. To take safeguards for constitutional rights provided to women and to advise the government regarding them.


B. Reviewing the current laws related to women and making suggestions for necessary amendments.


C. Investigation of personal complaints like sexual harassment / exploitation at the workplace and informing the appropriate officer regarding the matters.


D. The Commission may sponsor family Lok Adalats for speedy justice for women.


E. Providing funding for lawsuits related to questions affecting the majority of women.


F. To inspect or get any prison, correctional planet, women's organization or other place of custody where women are kept as prisoners or otherwise and to interact with the concerned officials for remedial action if necessary.


G. This Commission holds the powers of a Civil Court, it can issue summons to any person or officer.
